Reasons for Learning

Learning Music for Fun

Praise Music School strives to teach music in a way that develops abilities which enable students to have fun with music. The school is not focussed on “fun with music” activities, as these tend to be very short term and ultimately unrewarding activities that leaves the student more frustrated and overwhelmed than truly inspired and enabled.

What you will need:

  • Light Jazz, Easy hymns
    Exam bodies usually include fake (i.e. written out) Jazz pieces in the standard repertoire from the early grades. Ask your teacher if you would like to play more of these.
  • Pop or light classics
    Technical proficiency at the ABRSM Grade 4-6 level is enough to get started. Do take the initiative browse music book stores for material you enjoy as it is difficult for your teacher to know exactly what you like. Your teacher should be able to help you if you struggle with pieces you want to play.
  • Jazz
    Realistically one needs to be at a technical level of around ABRSM grade 6-8 before it is possible to improvise freely. A solid grasp of theory is also needed. Improvisation is a practiced skill, it is only rarely improvised on the spot. A good ear and perseverance is required to develop your own style.
  • Group music
    Often the most fun we can have in music is doing it with other people, whether in small or large groups. Some instruments lend themselves to this at a much younger age (strings) while others require quite an advanced technique to begin (piano), while woodwinds lie somewhere. Feel free to ask your teacher if you want to explore this route.

For School Placement or Subject Music

Doing music is an excellent way of increasing you child’s chances of placing in a good school, gifted programme or even career. Many companies recognise the discipline and attention to detail required to excel in music and some will even actively seek applicants with musical training for exactly that reason. Praise Music School is ideally placed to offer your child the guidance and support need to advance along this path, with a strong proven traditional approach to music education.

What you will need:
It is important to be realistic when having music lesson for this reason. Do try to find out roughly the required level and try to exceed that, but only by a little. There is no reason to try to race to grade 8 before age 16, as some techniques and musical simply require time to become established, and rushing through them only create problems that may later be extremely hard to resolve.


Learning Music for Cognitive Development and Self-Expression

Developing our students in deep and meaningful ways is the first goal of the teachers at Praise Music School, cognitive development flows from this development as a natural consequence of the type of work required to learn and excel in musical training. Praise Music can cater to each individual student’s needs, whether that be pressing for an accelerated pace of learning or a more relaxed style with no definite end-result apart from the pleasure of learning itself.

What you will need:
The biggest single requirement to learn music simply for its own sake is an ability to self-motivate as many of the good things in music flow out of the ability to persevere and do rote practicing. By its nature it is not always immediately apparent how the work you are doing now will help you express yourself until after you can express yourself already. Only by committing yourself fully, both emotionally and intellectually, can the benefits of music can be great and lasting.
